The Seasonal Festivals of Dunhuang

Overview

By Shining Xu

This book combines the murals of Dunhuang with China’s traditional 24 solar terms, presenting readers with a feast of Chinese aesthetics. Various textured backgrounds are used throughout: ink-wash textures evoke rain-related solar terms, desert textures represent the heat of summer, and yellowed xuan paper sets off the calm, windless terms. Black paper is used to highlight the vibrancy of the Beginning of Summer and the full moon of the Mid-Autumn night.
